Achille-Claude Debussy (August 22, 1869 – March 25, 1918) was amongst the most prominent figures within the impressionist period. Despite his French birthright, Debussy was largely influenced by a host of Russian composers and adopted their disdain for rules and regimentation. His compositions, thus, favored dissonances and challenged tonality. Debussy’s innovativeness had a profound impact on composers of the 20th century including Ravel, Stravinsky, Bartok and Gershwin.
