A child prodigy who learned to play the piano at age two, Saint-Saëns became one of the best-known French composers of he Romantic Era. A virtuoso on both the piano and the organ, Saint-Saëns improvised during performances, making him one of the most popular performers of his time, despite his lack of a charismatic stage presence. Imagination characterized his compositions, including his most-renowned works, “Carnival of the Animals,” “Danse Macabre,” and the sensuous “Samson et Dalila.”
